SPECIAL SEMINAR BERNOULLI CENTER EPFL

"Group representation theory" - January to June 2005

**Description:**
Let G be a reductive group over a field k. We
will try to determine the maximal order of a finite p-subgroup
of G(k), as a function of p, of the type of G, and of the
field k. In the case G = GL(n), this has been done by Schur,
generalizing an earlier result of Minkowski relative to k = Q.
We shall be mostly interested in the case of groups of exceptional
type.
