This workshop is concerned both with the structure theory of locally compact groups acting on discrete structures, and various notions of self-similarity as seen e.g. in Grigorchuk's and Sidki's groups. A crucial link between the two subjects stems from Baumgartner-Willis' tree representation theorem which associates a self-similar group acting on a regular rooted tree to each element of a totally disconnected locally compact group whose scale is different from 1. This puts classical examples of self-similar groups into a new classification context and provides a potential source of new examples.
This workshop aims to foster the exchange of results, examples and questions, as well as to open and strengthen collaborations.
